
The Suzuki Swift is the local favourite when it comes to budget cars in South Africa.
The Japanese hatchback, which starts at R224,900, sold a total of 1,842 units in May, making it the best-selling passenger car and the third best-selling vehicle overall behind the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux bakkies.
Another top pick for wallet-conscious was the locally-made VW Polo Vivo, which moved 1,543 units.
This was closely followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,537 units, showing that hatchbacks are still the way to go for affordable transport.
As far as crossovers and SUVs are concerned, motorists are gravitating towards the Chinese Chery Tiggo Pro 4, which managed to sell 1,255 units last month.
The Suzuki Fronx then came fifth overall with 1,219 units, followed by the Toyota Starlet with 1,039 purchaes.
Another 870 people bought the Kia Sonet, which falls just R5 short of R300,000.
Similarly, the Suzuki Ertiga people carrier sold 721 units, and the Toyota Starlet Cross saw 694 examples make their way off the showroom floor in May.
The final budget option to make the top 10 was the Toyota Vitz, which sold 624 units.
